CALENDAR

The II edition of the International Piano Competition “Humberto Quagliata – Città di San Giovanni Valdarno”, organized by Accademia Musicale Valdarnese, will take place in San Giovanni Valdarno in November, 2021. The competition, in memory of M° Humberto Quagliata, will be able to keep alive the memory of such an amazing musician, endowed with a great sensibility. He performed in some of the most renowned theaters and concert halls located in the five continents, in recital as a soloist or accompanied by orchestra. Accademia Musicale Valdarnese is honored to have had such a great friend.

Sections and Prizes

The competition is split in two sections:

1° SECTION – PIANO PERFORMANCE

Pianists aged 18-36 (born between January 1, 1985 and December 31, 2003) are eligible for participation.
Admission of candidates will be made on the premise of the submitted curriculum. The competition will consist of three parts:
• First qualifying round;
• Semi-final
• Final performed with orchestra.

1st SECTION prizes:
FIRST PRIZE: 3.500 EUR plus 3 concert engagements, one of them will be performed with orchestra during the Symphonic Season of OIDA in Arezzo, the other XV Asisa De Villaviciosa De Odon Festival nel 2022 and Diploma certificate;
SECOND PRIZE: 1.750 EUR plus 1 concert and Diploma certificate;
THIRD PRIZE: 750 EUR and Diploma certificate.

Prize concerts will only cover for room and board, whose amount will be established by the association hosting the concert.

2° SECTION – YOUNG PIANISTS

Pianists aged 6-25 (born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2015), are eligible for participation. They will be split in four categories based on age.
Single round
Cat. A aged 6-9 (born between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2015). Free choice program, max. length 7 minutes;
Cat. B aged 10-13 (born between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2011). Free choice program, max. length 12 minutes;
Cat. C aged 14-17 (born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2007). Free choice program, max. length 18 minutes;
Cat. D aged 18-21 (born between January 1, 2000 -and December 31, 2003). Free choice program; max. length 25 minutes.
Cat. E aged 22-25 (born between January 1, 1996 -and December 31, 1999). Free choice program; max. length 35 minutes.

2nd SECTION prizes:
• Outright First Prize, Cat. A and B: Diploma certificate plus EUR 150 Gift Voucher , one for each category;
• Outright First Prize, Cat. C: Diploma certificate plus EUR 300;
• Outright First Prize, Cat. D: Diploma certificate plus EUR 500;
First, Second and Third runner-up: Diploma certificate.

Outright first prize winners could be invited to perform during the Youth musical seasons organized by Accademia Musicale Valdarnese, without compensation.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION ROUNDS

1° SECTION – PIANO PERFORMANCE
Pianists aged 18-36 (born between January 1, 1985 and December 31, 2003)

Pianists curriculum should be submitted by September 30th, 2021 along with the application form here.

1° ROUND: Applicants with a successful curriculum evaluation by the artistic Direction will be required to perform a free choice concert program with a duration between 45 and 50 minutes.

2° ROUND: Applicants, selected by the jury at the end of the first round, will be required to play pieces with a duration between 30 and 35 minutes; the two pieces must be chosen from the following list:
One or more musical composition by Bach, Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven;
One or more musical composition by a romantic composer (up to 1899);
Performing the same piece in different rounds is not allowed.

3° ROUND: pplicants picked by the jury at the end of the second round will be admitted to the final. The final round will consist in a public concert with OIDA Orchestra. The concert will be held on Sunday, November 28, at 4 pm in Pieve of San Giovanni Battista, in San Giovanni Valdarno (AR).
Finalists shall play a concert for piano and orchestra chosen from the following list:

All rounds will be open to the public.

The purpose of payment shall be “Iscrizione al Concorso Humberto Quagliata – Città di San Giovanni Valdarno” .

Registration deadline: All applications must be submitted online here. The registration deadline is October 30th, 2021. The following documents must be uploaded on the same date: 1) copy of a valid identification document (ID card or Passport); 2) proof of payment of the registration fee; 3) pianist’s curriculum; 4) Competition repertoire chosen by the applicant for the 3 rounds.

All applications and the required documents must be received by the given deadline. Please note that uncomplete applications will be rejected.

The registration fee will be refunded to applicants who will not be accepted to the competition after the evaluation of their curriculum.

2° SECTION – YOUNG PIANISTS
Pianists aged 10 – 25 (born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2011)

Single round

Registration fee: 45 EUR for Cat. A 6-9 years (born between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2015);
Registration fee: 45 EUR for Cat. B 10-13 years (born between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2011);
Registration fee: 45 EUR for Cat. C 14-17 years (born between January 1,2004 and December 31, 2007);
Registration fee: 55 EUR for Cat. D 18-21 years (born between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2003);
Registration fee: 65 EUR for Cat. D 22-25 years (born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 1999).

The Purpose of payment to be stated on the bank transfer order shall be “Iscrizione al Concorso Humberto Quagliata – Città di San Giovanni Valdarno – … Category ” (the proper category, A,B,C,D has to be given in the reason of payment). Any candidate may ask to compete in a higher category than the one matching their age; in this case, the candidate should pay the corresponding registration fee.
Registration deadline: applications (Cat. C,D) must be submitted by the online here. The registration deadline is September 30th, 2019. The following documents must be uploaded on the same date: 1) copy of a valid identification document (ID card or Passport); 2) proof of payment of the registration fee; 3) Repertoire chosen by the applicant for the single performance. JURY AND ARTISTIC DIRECTION

The organizing committee reserves the right of possible substitutions or additions of jury members due to circumstances beyond the control.

Should a candidate be a relative, a relative in law, or an acquaintance during the previous two years before the competition, the jury member will abstain from the discussion and evaluation of the performance of the given candidate: such abstention will be noted during the jury meetings.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The competition will take place in San Giovanni Valdarno (Ar), Italy, from November 21th to November 28th, 2021 within a building called Pieve di San Giovanni Battista, located in Piazza Cavour. The schedule of casting and roll call will be made available starting from October 30th, 2021 on the accademiamusicalevaldarnese.it web page. Each candidate is required to identify themselves showing a valid identity document and two copies of their selected pieces. Music scores must be in the same edition they use in the performance.
Showing up at the roll call is mandatory. Latecomers will be admitted only for justified reasons and only if they arrive before the end of the session. Latecomers will be the last to be heard. Three pianos will be made available for rehearsal to the participants of the 1st section in the headquarters of Accademia Musicale Valdarnese. Rehearsal timetables will be defined and communicated on a day-by-day basis.
Winners’ concert will take place on November 28th, 2021 at 6 pm (18:00 h). Participation to the final concert is mandatory for prize assignment.
All applications, with all the required documents (copy of an identification document, proof of fee payment, curriculum – for 1st section applicants only-, written consent signed by parent or guardian – for underage applicants only) must be submitted on-line by October 30th, 2021.
The decision of the jury is final and irrevocable.

The evaluation criteria are established by the Jury, which in the edition is chaired by Jean Francois Antonioli.

1st SECTION – PIANO PERFORMANCE

All performances must strictly be by memory.
Qualification for the first round is irrevocably awarded by the artistic direction based on the submitted artist’s curriculum.
Qualification for the semi-final and final with orchestra are decided by the jury.

The final ranking will be established based on Jury’s grades. The Jury has the right to not assign prizes if none of the candidates reach the expected level.
The 1st prize may not be shared.

Two copies of the performed pieces must be taken to the Jury by the candidates before the beginning of their performance.
Missing attendance to the winners’ concert leads to the loss of the award.

2nd SECTION – YOUNG PIANISTS

Performance by memory is not mandatory.
Jury’s grades are given in hundredths (First prize: grade range 95-100; Second prize: grade range 90-94; Third prize: grade range 80-89. Outright First Prize is assigned to the winner of the first prize having the highest grade).
The Jury reserves the right to not assign prizes if none of the candidates reach the expected level.
All auditions are public.

Further remarks
The Artistic direction of the competition cannot take responsibility for any possible damages, risks of whatever nature experienced by the participants throughout the event.
The participants cannot claim any economic reward for their performances during the competition and the final concert. No reward can be claimed for the possible radio or tv broadcasting of performance recordings.
Enrolment in the competition implies the unconditioned acceptance of the present regulations. In case of dispute, any controversies fall within the jurisdiction of the Court of Arezzo (Foro di Arezzo, Italy). The official reference text is the one drawn up in the Italian language.

The history of San Giovanni Valdarno goes back to 1296, when it was established as a military citadel called “Castel San Giovanni”. Birthplace of the renaissance famous painter Masaccio, San Giovanni Valdarno boasts extraordinary artistic and cultural assets kept in museums housed in the most relevant buildings of the town, like Palazzo d’Arnolfo, Casa Masaccio, Basilica S. Maria delle Grazie, Chiesa di San Lorenzo.
